MOSES.

One of the most sublime pictured in the Bible is that of the death of that great man. He was 120 years old, yet his eyes was not dim nor his natural force abated. He received the divine command to ascent a mountain and – die! Alone be climbs the sites of Nebo and reaches the top of Pisgah. Mark the illustrious servant of God as he ascents to the place whence his eye is to sweep the fertile land of promise, and then close in death. His grey hairs steam in the breeze and sparkle like a crown of glory in the sun. Far outstretched before him lies the land on reaching which, with the vast multitude to whom he had been, under God, a saviour, a leader, a prince, his heart had been many years set. But he may not enter. He gazes, however, on the future portions of the tribes, on “all the land of Gilead unto Dan, and all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah unto the utmost sea, and the south, and the plain of the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, unto Zoar. And the Lord said unto him, this is the land which I sware* unto Abraham, unto Isaac and unto Jacob, saying, I will give it unto thy seed; I have caused thee to see with thine eyes; but thou shalt not go over thither.” The eye of the great saint closes, and his spirit ascends to heaven.

*Sware. This word, now in disuse, is the past tense for swear e.g. swore
